Beltane Ritual: The Red Fruit of Joy by Suzanne Ress

Before the evening of April 30, you’ll need to prepare a few things for this group ritual. You’ll need a Green Man mask – be as creative as you like with it. An easy way to make one is to glue artificial oak leaves all over a simple gree, brown, or gold eye mask. You can do something much more elaborate if you are so inclined, from a whole-face to whole-head-covering mask, purchased or handmade, with real or artificial greenery.

You’ll need a wreath of spring flowers. Ideally, the flowers should be fresh lilacs, lily of the valley, and hawthorn blossoms, but other kinds will do, as will artificial ones. The flower colors should be white, blue, purple, and yellow. they can simply be attached to a wire head-sized circle with pipe cleaners or, as with the mask, feel free to create something much fancier.

The ritual is best done in an open space with, optimally, a large oak tree to oversee. Two bonfires should be made with at least six feet between them. If you are unable to build open bonfires legally and safely, white pillar candles can stand in for them. If you do not have access to an open space with a large oak tree, obtain several acorns, and a wand or stick of oak wood.

You will need a bowl full of red fruit. Strawberries are best but, in case of allery or other reasons making strawberries impossible, you may use cherries, red apples, or red grapes.

You wll need a bottle of red wine or, if preferred, red fruit juice and a beautiful goblet in glass or silver.

Prepare your altar and bonfires, if you will be using them, ahead of time. If you are permitted and desirous of using bonfires, gather up your wood, kindling, and lighters in two safe locations, side-by-side, with at least six feet between them – wide enough a space for people for to move between them safely.

If you are using pillar candles to represent bonfires, make sure you have lanterns or hurricane lamps to contain them in; otherwise, even an imperceptible breeze will blow them out. You can use as few as two of them or as many as you can afford! These can be set on tables or directly on the ground. Make sure there is no dry organic material near them that could accidentally catch fire.

Make an altar facing north, facing an abalanced evenly between the two bonfires, at least six feet away from them. On the altar, place the Green Man mask, the wreath of spring flowers, the bowl of red fruit, the wine or juice, the oak stick or wand and acorns, and any other items, such as ritual jewelry, potion bottles, magic coins, amulets, etc., you wish to consecrate and charge.

The bonfires or candles should be lit at moonrise on April 30. It is important that this ritual is held outdoors, but if it is raining or the weahter is otherwise inclement, the ritual may be held under a portico, a covered deck ,or perhaps inside an open garage (no bonfires, obviously!). At the very least, open up all the windows in your indoor locale so that fresh air may circulate.

When all participants are ready and hte bonfires or candles have been lit the leader shll lift the oak stick or wand in her left hand and create a magical enclosure by leading all participants in walking deosil around and between thebonfires and the altar to form the shape of a three-leaved clover. Particpants may drum, chant, ring bells, shake maracas, or just meditate as they walk the clover many times over and over. This will draw in fairies adn magic and close out any negative forces, as well as raise the group’s collective energy to a crescendo.

After enough time has elapsed, and the group’s energy level is very fine and focused, the noise and movement should be halted by the coven leader by returning to the altar and raising her wand or stick. She will then select two people to represent the Green Man and the Great Mother. These two will come forward and stand before the altar with the bonfires to their backs. The flower wreath will be placed upon the Great Mother’s head, and these words spoken by the coven’s leader:

You stand before us wreathed in flowers, immortal and perfect, the mother of all earth.

The mask shall be put on the Green Man’s face, and the following words uttered:

You stand here covered in green leaves, the spirit of renewal and joy.

Take a few moments to feel the presence of the Great Mother through this respresetative human.

Now the Green Man and the Great Mother turn to each other and take each other’s hands, and the leader says:

Joined together, spirit and body, you will reach ecstatic pleasure, ensuring fertility and new life and spirit for all here present.

Take some moments for the Green Man’s joyous presence to be felt and appreciated.

Now the two shall dance and skip along the clover path previously marked, singing, shouting, laughing, or remaining silent, as they see fit. Others fo the group may drum, play their various instruments, or vocalize, as desired. After a short time, the remainder of the participants will join in the dance, following the two lovers, faster and faster around the three-leaf clover, until everyone has had enough.

Then, still inside the magic dome, the leader shall return to the altar and present thebowl of strawberries to the fairies and other beneficial spirits present, who shall eat some of it first, and only after they have eaten their fill shall the human and god-represntative participants enjoy some for themselves.

The leader will say:

All eat now of the bountiful red fruit. Let the sweet juices of fairy spittle and fertility, and all of earth’s creativity, enter into you.

The red wine shall be poured ito hte goblet. The leader will bless this with her wand and say:

All partake of the red libation, its earthly goodness bringing joy to our spirits.

First the fairies adn then each human person shall drink some of it.

Taking the acorns into her right hand and tapping them with the oak stick or wand, the leader will say:

Overseen by the great oak, king of trees, may all of us here, visible and invisible, take pleasure in the continuing productivity and ever-renewed beauty offered by the Great Mother and celebrate her union with the Green Man. Go forth all, in happiness and in peace.

At this point in the ritual, if there are items to be charged, now is the time.

To reopen the magic ome, the leader will walk the clover widdershins and backwards three times. And now, all may partake of whatever other refreshments there may be, or they may dance, or relax, or lie down upon the earth, or converse with the fairies or with one another, or walk amongst the trees until they are exhausted or until the dawn of May 1, whichever comes sooner.

Ritual for Acceptance of Your Wounds by Mickie Mueller

This ritual is layered and meant to be repeated many times; accepting our heartbreak, loss, grief, and trauma isn’t easy, but it’s always worth it. If you work this practice and feel that it’s overwhelming, look for a licensed therapist who can assist you on your healing journey, like I have.

Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. You may play some soothing music and light a candle and some healing incense. You’ll also need a jar with a lid (it can be plain or you may decorate it), a sheet of paper, and a fireproof dish. Write down a wound from you past and how it made you feel. It’s okay to cry, scream, punch a pilllow, and just let it all out. Now look at the wound and see it with new eyes. See the person you were at the time the injury took place. Send that person love and healing. Treat them with teh same kindness you would treat a friend and let them know that you support them. Write a loving note of support to them on on the other side of the paper, telling them how brave and strong they are because htey made it through a hard time. Light the paper and let it burn in a fireproof dish, sending the message of love to your former self. Put the ashes into the jar. Mix in a pinch of chamomile, ground ginger, and sage from your kitchen. You may also add lemon balm, skullcap, and passionflower if you have it. Repeat this no more than once a week with as many wounds as you need or the same wound multiple times as needed using the same jar.

Gratitude Ritual (and Happiness Spell)

Try a gratitude ritual to help you achieve happiness, well-being, optimism, increased energy, mental balance, better tolerance, reduced frustration, and increased self-confidence. This spell works through both valid psychological techniques and magical principles. Give it a shot, you’ll be grateful.

Timing Your Spell: For this spell you will be creating a powerfully charged talisman you can carry with you. Begin your spell during the waxing moon such as on the day of the first quarter moon. Complete the spell on the full moon. The effects of this spell will be evient to most practitioners within just a couple of days, but continued focus of your will and intent for a t least a week can result in greater success.

Select a Talisman: You can use any object that is easily carried such as a stone, crystal, or piece of jewelry. The picture on the next page shows a few items to inspire you. The acron is a brass finial I nabbed from the top of a lamp afte rbeing inspired by an episode of Bewitched! I used the iron key from my mother’s oak dresser in the picture because it already triggered fond memories. Your favorite pentacle or trquetra necklace, a clear quartz crystal, a tumble-polished rose quartz, lapis lazuli, moonstone, or smooth landscaping rock will all do nicely. Once you have completed the spell, your talisman is imbued with power. Holding it will increase your happiness and energy and it can help you to put stressful situations into perspective for better problem-solving.

Charging Your Talisman: The directions for this working are shockingly simple. Every day, hold hte object you have chosen and focos on one day you are grateful for. Of course, you may repeat this exercise throughout the day whenever you think of something. If you carry the talisman in your pocket you can just touch it while you focus your intent. Close your eyes and feel the gratitude you have and send it through your hand into the talisman. Truly feel your thankfulness and gratitude. Don’t allow guilt or a sense of indebtedness creep into your thoughts or emotions. This isn’t about owing back, it’s about true appreciation, acknowledging and accepting.

You may speak Words of Power or a prayer of thanks to your chosen deities/deity at the end of your energy projection, but sometimes the deep sense of gratitude may overwhelm you to the point that there are no words to express it. You may just end the focusing session with “so mot it be” or an affirmation.

On the last day of your spell, think about how the energy of the full moon reflects the fullness of your gratitude. You may choose to leave your talisman out under hte energy of the full moon this night. It doesn’t matter if it is cloudy, the full moon will still imbue your talisman with energy. If you have selected an item that should not be left outdoors, just leave it on a windowsill or your altar.

Carry your talisman with you whenever you need a mental or spiritual lift. As the year progresses, you may wish to boost the energy of your talisman by repeating your focus during any moon phase. You might discover that making this a dailiy ritual can be very rewarding.

Modern Ritual to Honor Dionysus by Charlynn Walls

Gather all the tools you need prior to beginning your ritual. Items for the altar could include candles for the quarters, grapes, grapevines, pinecones, and a container of water. Also include some grape juice or wine and crackers or cake as an offering later in the ritual. You may want a small notebook or your Book of Shadows to write your experiences in after your ritual. You may also want a drum or a recording of some drumming that could be turned on during ritual.

The ritual should begin near dusk and run into the evening, as Dionysus enjoys merriment and a festival atmosphere. Adding some fairy lights around the ritual area would also add to the atmosphere.

This ritual can be done on your own or with others. It can be done inside or outside as weather permits. You should make sure that you have plenty of room to move within the circle, as you will be moving to the durmming or movusic that you chose for this ritual.

Prepare your ritual space and cleanse the area. There are a variety of ways to clease the area, and you can use any that works best for you. One suggestion that works well and is appropriate is the use of a bundled grapevine to asperge blessed or charged water. It is also a suitable alternative if you are unable to use something like sage because of an allergy, and it is what we will sue in this ritual.

To begin, you will want to set up your altar area. Place the quarter candles in their corresponding directions. Put your notebook or Book of Shadows on the altar as well. Set your water near the bundle of graepvines for easy retrieval. You can include deocrative items like grapes, grapevines, or a small wreath. You can include pinecomes as well,a s they are reminiscent of a thyrsus wand, which is made with a fennel stalk and a pinecone.

Bless the water before beginning. Hold your hands over hte water and close your eyes. Feel the energy build up through your core, and as you feel it peak, say,

Water is life. From it comes all things. May the energy within sustain and cleanse. Blessed be!

Cast your circle by calling each quarter. As you move to each quarter, take the grapevine bundle, dip it into the blessed water, and sprinkle the water to create the circle.

Calling the Quarters

NORTH. I call to the powers of the north, the guardians of the earth. Bless us with yor grounding inluences as we reach toward communion with the god. We welcome you to our circle!

EAST. I call to the powers of the east, the guardians of air. Bless us with the wind in our hair as we dance ecstatically. We welcome you to our circle!

SOUTH. I call to the powers of the south, the guardians of fire. Bless us with warmth as we move and dance with divinity. We welcome you to our circle!

WEST. I call to the powers of the west, the guardians of water. Bless us with cool waters to temper our emotions. We welcome you to our circle!

Invocation

Start your ritual music at this time whether that is from you drumming to get into the right frame of mind or if you play a recording of drumming or some other music that speaks to you. Now will be the time to reach out directly to Dionysus and ask him to enlighten you with an ecstatic spiritual experience. You will be trying to get into a trancelike state so that you can be receptive to what Dionysus wants to share with you.

Pick up your glass of wine or juice and take a drink. Dionysus is the god of wine, and you are taking him into you so that he can provide you “madness,” or a unique way of seeing. Say,

As I drink of you, Dionysus, grant me your presence so that I can be moved. Let my mind and body be free to receive your messages this day.

Set aside your cup. Get yp and move. Feel the rhythm inside of you. Lose yourself in the music and feel the weight of the day slip off you as you open yourself up. Continue to move and know that the elements and Dionysus are there dancing with you. Open yourself up to the messages as you dance in joy. Continue to do so unitl you need to rest, and then lie on the ground to help restore yourself before continuing. Be aware of what you are seeing and feeling. You may want to note these things after coming out of the trance, as not all messages given by deity are immediately clear.

Cakes and Ale

This is a time to renew your strength from the ecstatic, trancelike dancing and to acknowledge your honored guest. You should take a bit of the crackers or cake and drop it onto the ground near the altar or, if inside, drop it on a dish to be later take outside, saying,

Dionysus, thank you for your presence. Your insight has been a blessing.

Next, take some of the wine or juice and pour the drink onto the ground or into the dish, saying,

This elixir has given me insight and visions that will sustain me. Thank you, Dionysus.

Once you have presented the cakes and ale to your guests, you can take some for yourself. Take the time you need to restore yourself and absorb what you learned during your trance before closing out the circle. This is an excellent time to make any notes on your observances during the ritual.

Releasing the Quarters

WEST. Powers of the west, I thank you for your time and tempering my emotions, keeping them in check. Hail and farewell!

SOUTH. Powers of the south, I thank you for your time and your subtle warmth while we communedd. Hail and farewell!

EAST. Powers of the east, I thank you for your time and your gentle winds that danced with us. Hail and farewell!

NORTH. Powers of the north, I thank you for your time and your strength to keep me grounded. Hail and farewell!

Closing the Circle

Take a moment to contemplate the rite and the visions that Dionysus gifted you with. Take time to again thank him and all who gathered with you. End by saying,

The circle is open. Hail and farewell to you all!

A Self-Dedication Rite

Prepare yourself by drawing a bath of warm water. Add a tablespoon or so of salt and a few drops of a scented oil such as sandalwood.

If you have no bath, use a shower. Fill a washcloth with salt, add a few drops of essential oil, and rub your body. If you’re performing the ritual at the sea or a river, bathe there if you so desire.

As you bathe, prepare for the coming rite. Open your consciousness to higher levels of awareness. Deep breathe. Cleanse your mind as well as your body.

After bathing, dry and dress for the journey. Go to a place in the wild where you feel safe. It should be a comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed by others, an area where the powers of the Earth and the elements are evident. It may be a mountain top, a desert canyon or cave, perhaps a dense forest, a rocky outcropping over the sea, a quiet island in the center of a lake. Even a lonely part of a park or a garden can be used. draw on your imagination to find the place.

You need take nothing with you but a vial of richly scented oil. Sandalwood, frankincense, cinnamon or any other scent is fine. When you arrive at the place of dedication, remove your shoes and sit quietly for a few moments. Calm your heart if you’ve exerted yourself during your travel. Breathe deeply to return to normal, and keep your mind free of cluttered thoughts. Open yourself to the natural energies around you.

When you’re calm, rise and pivot slowly on one foot, surveying the land around you. You’re seeking the ideal spot. Don’t try to find it; open your awareness to the place. When you’ve discovered it (and you’ll know when), sit, kneel or lie flat on your back. Place the oil on the Earth beside you. Don’t stand – contact the Earth.

Continue deep breathing. Feel the energies around you. Call the Goddess and God in any words you like, or use the following invocation. Memorize these words before the rite so that they’ll spill effortlessly from you, or improvise:

O Mother Goddess,
O Father God,
Answers to all mysteries and yet mysteries unanswered;
In this place of power I open myself
to Your Essence.
In this place and in this time I am changed;
From henceforth I walk the Wiccan path.
I dedicate myself to you, Mother Goddess and Father God.

(rest for a moment, silent, still. Then continue:)

I breathe your energies into my body, commingling, blending,
mixing them with mine,
that I may see the divine in nature,
nature in the divine,
and divinity within myself and all else.
O Great Goddess,
O Great God,
Make me one with your essence
Make me one with your essence
Make me one with your essence.

You may feel bursting with power and energy, or calm and at peace. Your mind might be in a whirl. The Earth beneath you may throb and undulate with energy. Wild animals, attracted by the psychic occurrence, might grace you with their presence.

Whatever occurs, know that you have opened yourself and that the Goddess and God have heard you. You should feel different inside, at peace or simply powerful.

After the invocation, wet a finger with the oil and mark these two symbols somewhere on your body. It doesn’t matter where; you can do this on your chest, forehead, arms, legs, anywhere. As you anoint, visualize these symbols sinking into your flesh, glowing as they enter your body and then dispersing into millions of tiny points of light.

The formal self-dedication is ended. Thank the Goddess and God for their attention. Sit and meditate before leaving the place of dedication.

Once home, celebrate in some special way.
