A Modern Hearth Blessing

  • Candle
  • Your favorite incense
  • Offering
  • Small bowl

This blessing is just a starting point and can be used as is or modified to suit the kind of hearth you will be working with.

Place your items on your hearth and light the candle. Light the incense, waft the smoke over the area, and visualize any unwanted energy dispersing. Take a moment to open your awareness and see your entire house from a bird’s-eye view. In your mind, track its borders and see all the oroms in the home. Every home has a kind of spirit of its own, a spirit of that place. Try to connect with this spirit of place, sending out your intentions to protect the borders of this place and those who live within. You could also choose wo see wealth and love flowin ginto the space.

I light my hearth's flame.
I stand at the sacred center of my home and heart.
May this flame be a flame of protection,
A flame of love and warmth,
A flame of (whatever you wish to draw into your space).
I leave this offering to (hearth deity, home spirits, etc.), who watch over this space.
Bring your blessing and gentle protection.

Leave your offering in the bowl. Let the candle burn for a little while before extinguishing it. Make sure to visit your hearth regularly, renewing your intentions and making offerings.

Charging a Stone for Protection

Now that you have a consecrated tool, you can use it to help focus and direct your energy when charging objects. Select an object you wish to carry for protection. Some stones that work well for this are black tourmaline, black obsidian, tiger’s eye and clear quartz.

Cleanse the stone by letting it soak in the bowl of blesse water for a few minutes. You can also expose to moonlight or sunlight* for an hour to cleanse it prior to your ritual. Focus your energy with the same visualization as you used to consecrate your tool. Hold your wand or athame and draw energy up from the earth, through the tool, and into the stone. Notice how the tool really helps channel your power! While visualizing and projecting your energy, you may wish to say Words of Power or vocalize an affirmation such as:

"Three time three I charge thee,
to protect from harm to sento me."

* Caution

The color of some stones such as amehtyst, rose quartz, ruby, and aventurine may fade in sunlight. These are best cleansed in running water, moonlight, or censing. Minerals like calcite and selenite may be damaged by water and are best cleansed by censing and moonlight.

Clear quartz gets a powerful charge from sunlight, but use caution when sunning spheres, eggs, and other quartz with curved shapes as these are especially good at magnifying sunlight and starting fires.

Simple Midsummer Protection Spell

Ancient people all over Europe are known to have celebrated Midsummer. According to scholar Ronald Hutton, Midsummer (as well as Midwinter) celebrations were common throughout ancient Britain and almost certainly employed fire. There is evidence of “the making of sacred fires at the opening of summer at at its solstice, to bless and protect people and their livestock fro the dangers of the season” (Hutton 2013, loc 7698). Fire was used to purify with smok, and to provide protection. Use a red votive candle and carve it with protective symbols such as pentagrams. Imagine ancient tribes of people at Midsummer creating protective fires for their livestock and villages. You are connecting with your ancestors and all those who came before by utilizing the power of fire, even if you’re merely lighting a candle. The fire is symbolic. It is pure power. As you light thecandle, visulize the element of fire forming a protective shield around you that deflects all negative energy and harm of any kind. You can imagine a circle of fire, a series of fires in a ring around you, or a sphere of fire that encompasses you like a ball. Even though fire can destroy, in this case it’s warding all harm away from you. Say these words three times:

Fire is power, and it’s mine to wield; fire is power, and it is my shield.

Allow the candle to burn out. Anytime you need to evoke the protective shield, repeat the phrase and visualization.

A Map for Safe Travel

Perform this map ritual for safe travel, whether you’re going on a far-flung trip or making your daily commute.

You will need:

  • Peppermint essential oil for protection (also good for keeping alert!)
  • 1 black or light blue candle (blue and black for their protective qualities). Alternatively, you can make a road candle with a sheet of black beeswax and a tlight blue taper or pillar candle. Cut the beeswax into long strips of equal widths and wind them around the taper or pillar to form a “road” that spirals around the candle. Be sure to press the beeswax strips gently but firmly onto the pillar so that they stick. (You can also use a hair dryer to heat up the wax a bit so that it adheres better.) Once the candle is made, dress it with the oil.
  • Black and light blue markers.
  • 12-14 inch lengths of black and light blue ribbons

If you did not make the road candle described above, dress the candle with peppermint oil. Light it and use its flame to focus. When you’re ready, log in to Google Maps or your favorite online service to create a map of your route. Take your time and cinclude all the stop you plan to make, then print the map.

Using the black marker, trace your route, visualizing yourself arriving at each destination safely. Write a mantra out along your route (feel free to change and adapt!):

There and back,
Keep me on track,
Safe and sound
'Til the journey's end.

Now take the light blue marker and with broad, outward strokes, color hte route that will give your path a protective aura in case of detours or changes of plans.

Roll the map up, repeating the mantra, then tie with the ribbons. Why roll rather than fold the map? After all, most maps (of my era, anyway) were folded (infuriatingly difficult to refold!). The folling motion makes for smooth, swift travel. Creases made by folding symbolically cut lines through maps, which may incorporate stops or blocks into your travel plans.

Keep the map with you when you travel. Safe journeys!

A Threshold Spell

For this spell you’ll need:

  • some salt
  • a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar
  • one clove of crushed garlic

Begin by sprinkling some salt along your threshold. In a small dish, mix together a few grains of salt, the lemon juice or vinegar, and the crushed garlic. Now, bury the garlic near your front door. Next, with a broom, sweep the salt you’ve sprinkled along your threshold away from your door. Continue sweeping the salt away from your home and off your porch or steps if you have them. As you sweep, say this charm:

Spirits dark and spirits that I dread,
Leave this threshold where I tread.

Repeat this spell once a year, or more if you feel it’s necessary.

Other Hair Magick

Hair magick can be performed without removing a single piece form your head. There are lots of ways to add some enchantment to your hair care routine, to attract the energies you desire, and to repel those you don’t.

Essential Oils: You can add a few drops of essential oil to your shampoo or conditioner. Remember to only add a small amount so that it doesn’t compromise the product. Try mint for prosperity, rosemary for protection, or chamomile for peace.

Braids: If you have long hair, you can use knot magick to attract your desires. While braiding your hair, visualize what you would like to bring into your life. When you tie the elastic in place, state, “It is done.” Repeat this every time you braid your hait until the thing you seek comes to you.

Cleansing: Every New Moon, pull the hair out of your hairbrush and safely burn it while letting go of everything you no longer need. This will clear out all the stagnant energy from the last Moon cycle, clearing th way for growth and new beginnings.

Crystals: Quartz crystal amplifies your personal power and boosts spiritual awareness. Place a quartz crystal in your bottle of shampoo or other hair product. The energy from the quartz crystal will linger every time you wash your hair. You can do this with other crystals as well according to what you want to attract. Just make sure the crytals you choose won’t be ruined by being immersed in liquid.

Protective Armor Spell

In this spell, you’ll surround a piece of hair with a protective seal, thus guarding the person it came from with an energetic shield. You can do this spell for yourself or someone else.

You will need:

  • Piece of cardboard to protect your work surface from melting wax
  • Square of black paper
  • Piece of hair belonging to the person you’d like to protect
  • Olive oil
  • Black candle
  • Lighter

Put the cardboard on your work surface to prevent it getting ruined by melting wax. Lay the piece of black paper down, and then place the hair in the center of the paper. Visualize the person it belongs to as clearly as possible. Carefully fold the paper aorund the hair, bending all the corners in so the hair cannot fall out. Make it into the smallest possible compact shape. Set it on the cardbaord.

Put a dab of olive oil on your fingers. Anoint the candle by rubbing the oil into it, starting at the bottom and massaging the oil up to the middle of the candle. Repeat this motion fro the top of the candle, down to the middle. Whle you do this, visualize the person represted in the spell surrounde dby a protective sphere of energy.

Light the black candle. Hold it at an angle, and let the wax drip onto the folded paper. While you do this, repeat the chant,

A layer of armor protects [name] from all harm.

Continue to drip the wax onto all sides of the folded paper, rotating it as necessary, unti lit is completely covered in a shall of black hardened wax. Blow out the candle.

Anytime you feel that there’s a need for a boost of protective energy, light the candle and drip more wax onto the amulet, thickening the “armor” surrounding the person.

Keep the amulet in a safe place. Once the protection spell is no longer necessary, dispose of the amulet or bury it. If the black candle isn’t all gone, you can keep it for future protective spells.
