Memorial Candle by Ember Grant

While the ancient Celts certainly considered this an important time of year, we can’t be certain if they honored ancestors on this night. Regardless, it has become a custom for many modern Wiccans, Witches, and Pagans to perform rituals at Samhain for ancestors. For this ritual, you will create a candle to honor a departed loved one using a sigil created specifically for that person.

The act of creating a sigil is part of the magic. Burning it, in this case on a candle, releases its energy. There are many ways to create a sigil, and the preparation is a key part of the ritual.

In this case, you’re creating a symbol that expresses something about the person you wish to honor. Of course, you could just write that person’s name on a candle, but where’s the symbolism in that? Go deeper and incorporate things that remind you of that person’s character.

One easy way is to combine the person’s initials with simple symbols of things they loved. For example, I have an aut whose initials are S.G.W.F.T. (first name, middle name, maiden name, two married names). You can use more or fewer letters. Practice on paper first. Find a way to link the ltters together. Next, think of things he or she enjoyed. My aunt loved owls, I could draw an outline of an owl into the sigil or just a pair of large owl eyes. She was a singer and loved music, so I could add a music note too. You get the idea. Spend some time creating the sigil and, when you have it perfected, you can begin the spell and carve it into the candle.

You can use a taper or votive candle, but it may be easier to carve on a larger one, such as a pillar size. The choice is yours. White is a good color for this candle, but you can also use brown or black.

You can make several of these – one for each person you wish to honor – and decorate your altar with other mementos such as photos, special items, and flowers. You can honor relatives, friends – anyone you wish, even if it’s not someone you knew personally but admired from afar. As long as you have a way to convey that person’s name and something of their personality to the candle, it works. The goal is to celebrate the life of someone you miss.

Anoint the candle and engrave it with a crystal point or other tool of your choice. The point is to focus your energy while creating the sigil and then allow the candle to burn out.

As you light each one, say these words and insert the name of the person you’re honoring.

Light the way for [person’s name], wherever [he/she/they] may be; their memory lives on, they are part of me.

Follow this by saying whatever other words you desire. Let the candles burn out or relight them each night until they do. [1]

An Autumn Banishing Spell

  • Blue candle
  • Black candle
  • Lighter or matches
  • Knife
  • 1 apple, preferably one that was grown near you
  • 1 fresh mint leaf
  • 1 black ribbon or cord
  • Wooden skewer or toothpicks

On the evening of a waning Moon, face west with both of the candles in front of you. As you light the blue candle, say these words:

I light the blue for the presence of helpful feminine energy.

Picture cleansing water flowing underground, away from you, through brooks and streams and rivers and into oceans adn seas. As the water flows it carries away debris and waste.

Light the black candle and say,

I call upon the waning powers of the Moon, who rules these cleansing flowing waters, to banish the thing I shall not name.

As you say these words, visualize the thing you wish to banish as a dark blob with a feeling attached to it, but nameless and unformed.

Cut the apple in half horizontally so that its inner pentagram is revealed. Rub the lower half inside with the mint leaf while visualizing the dark blob. Put the two halves of the apple back together with teh mint leaf between them and fasten them together securely with the wooden sewer, then wrap it up with the black cord or ribbon. Blow out the black candle and cry out,

So mote it be!

Gently extinguish the blue candle and give it thanks.

Bury the apple immediately, not on your property or anywhere you normally pass by. As the apple rots away underground, sho shall your problem diminish and disappear.

Protective Armor Spell

In this spell, you’ll surround a piece of hair with a protective seal, thus guarding the person it came from with an energetic shield. You can do this spell for yourself or someone else.

You will need:

  • Piece of cardboard to protect your work surface from melting wax
  • Square of black paper
  • Piece of hair belonging to the person you’d like to protect
  • Olive oil
  • Black candle
  • Lighter

Put the cardboard on your work surface to prevent it getting ruined by melting wax. Lay the piece of black paper down, and then place the hair in the center of the paper. Visualize the person it belongs to as clearly as possible. Carefully fold the paper aorund the hair, bending all the corners in so the hair cannot fall out. Make it into the smallest possible compact shape. Set it on the cardbaord.

Put a dab of olive oil on your fingers. Anoint the candle by rubbing the oil into it, starting at the bottom and massaging the oil up to the middle of the candle. Repeat this motion fro the top of the candle, down to the middle. Whle you do this, visualize the person represted in the spell surrounde dby a protective sphere of energy.

Light the black candle. Hold it at an angle, and let the wax drip onto the folded paper. While you do this, repeat the chant,

A layer of armor protects [name] from all harm.

Continue to drip the wax onto all sides of the folded paper, rotating it as necessary, unti lit is completely covered in a shall of black hardened wax. Blow out the candle.

Anytime you feel that there’s a need for a boost of protective energy, light the candle and drip more wax onto the amulet, thickening the “armor” surrounding the person.

Keep the amulet in a safe place. Once the protection spell is no longer necessary, dispose of the amulet or bury it. If the black candle isn’t all gone, you can keep it for future protective spells.
